2020 Tokyo Olympics Target for Local Sailor
Local Sailor, Nicola Boniface has her compass set firmly in the direction of competing for Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Growing up in Eastbourne, local girl Nikki has been involved in sailing for much of her life as a member of the Pevensey Bay sailing club.
Sailing the Olympic Class Catamaran with sailing partner Tom Phipps, they narrowly missed out on selection for the 2016 Rio Olympics after huge progress at the end of the 4 year Olympic cycle.
However they did travel to Rio prior to the games as training partners to the Team GB pairing, a vital experience to prepare them for the Tokyo cycle.
Nikki, now the number 1 British female in her sailing class, is now in a great position to kick-start the year and the Tokyo 2020 campaign. Proving this, in the first World Cup Series Event of 2017 Nikki and Tom sailing their ‘Nacra 17’ boat came second, winning a silver medal.
Like many top athletes, Nikki faces many barriers to reach the 2020 Olympics.
At the top of the list lies the need to fund coaching and training but specific to her sport the cost of equipment, her boat, and its travel across the world to various Olympic cycle and World events.
The current boat (Nacra 17), is being up-graded to a fully foiling boat for the Tokyo Olympics. Due to uncontrollable changes within their current class, the sailing pair are required to purchase a new boat to continue competing.
To raise support, on the 8th April Nikki and Tom are holding a 2020 Olympic Campaign Launch Party at local sailing club Pevensey Bay. It will be a night of great fun, delicious food, and a chance to get involved in their Olympic journey.
