Sport, Physical Activity and Health - what’s the link?

The overlap between the Sport, Physical Activity and Health Agendas are becoming more and more apparent. The huge health benefits to be gained from participating in sport and physical activity mean that by working together we can make a real impact in reducing obesity and tackle the issue of growing health inequalities.

Department of Health Funding for County Sports Partnerships (CSPs)

County Sports and Physical Activity Partnerships (CSPAPs) are uniquely positioned to boost delivery of wider physical activity alongside sport. As set out in the recent publication ‘Be Active, Be Healthy’ by the Department of Health, they aim to expand the remit of CSPAPs and use the new generic term ‘County Sports and Physical Activity partnerships (CSPAPs) to reflect the ongoing role in the co-ordination and delivery of physical activity.

The Department of Health are providing funding to County Sports and Physical Activity Partnerships to enable them to have an integral role in the delivery of national and regional physical activity strategies and supporting the delivery of local programmes to create a more active nation.  CSPAPs will be responsible for co-ordinating local programmes and investment to deliver physical activity and active recreation alongside sport.

Active People

The Active People Survey commissioned by Sport England collects information on a number of indicators that enable us to get an insight into how physically active the nation is.

The data gives Local Authorities, County Sports Partnerships and Primary Care Trusts, and other agencies as important benchmark information to help drive increases in the number of people who take part in sport and physical activity. This helps organisations and agencies to set targets to try to increase participation in sport by 1% year on year.
