SCSP Trust
Who we are and What we do
Active Sussex is largely funded by the Government to coordinate and facilitate the delivery of sport and physical activity initiatives across Sussex. Active Sussex operates as an incorporated company limited by guarantee and is a registered charity, and our purpose is to help drive improved access to, and an increased particpation in, sport and physical activity in Sussex.
Active Sussex is one of 49 County Sports Partnerships in England. Our aim is to bring together all key partners involved in the sector at a local level. We are committed to supporting a high quality delivery system for sport and physical activity in Sussex, working with our partners including Education, Governing Bodies of Sport, Local Authorities and Primary Care Trusts amongst others.
We provide a number of supporting services to our partners and are pivotal in contributing to the Government’s target of increasing the number of people participating in sport and physical activity by 2 million by 2012.
The core areas of work include: providing strategic guidance and direction, offering funding advice, working with community sports clubs and National Governing Bodies of Sport, coordinating volunteering programmes, helping to develop school-club links, facilitating disability sports development, and organising training and coach development courses.
Throughout the year, Active Sussex also organises a series of county level events and conferences, produces key network communications and maintains a central sport and physical activity website and searchable database.
Of course, in the run up to London 2012, we wish to enthuse and encourage our communities to participate more and take advantage of additional opportunities made available as a result of 2012 business investment and, through our partners, we want to ensure a lasting legacy that truly benefits the communities of Sussex.
Active Sussex Governance
The Trust is governed by a Board of Directors (who also serve as the Charity Trustees, and are referred to as the Board of Trustees from hereon), and supported by the Trust’s senior employees. Three sub-committees are convened by deploying appropriately skilled members from either group to deal with Human Resources, Marketing, and Finance and Legal matters arising (as required).
The current Board of Trustees consists of individuals recruited from the public, private and voluntary sectors. They bring the necessary skills and experience to the Trust to ensure sound governance, probity and excellent advocacy of the charity’s aims and objectives.

Operational Management
Under the current governance arrangements, the day to day executive functions of the Trust are handled by the Trust’s core staff, made up of the Partnership Director, Sports Development Manager, Marketing and Business Development Manager, Business Support Manager, Active & Healthy Workplaces Officer, Sports Development Officer, Events & Communications Officer and Business Support Officer. The Board of Trustees (through monitoring of the business plan on a quarterly basis) oversees the work of the core team, and along with it’s stautory govenance duties, it is responsible for setting and deciding strategic policy direction in pursuance of the charitable aims and business needs.
Financial Management
Budgets are devolved to the senior managers and other individual officers as appropriate, with monthly management accounts provided to all budget holders to enable ongoing financial monitoring and control. The Board of Trustees and other stakeholders receive monitoring figures on a quarterly basis. All payments are authorised in accordance with the Trust’s financial regulations and procedures.
National Investment Programmes
From 1 April 2009, the Trust will manage up the government funded community sports programmes shown below. The Trust is required to meet the terms and conditions for utilisation of all government grants. In terms of the planning and expenditure decisions for these programmes, this is achieved in conjunction with county or district sports delivery organisations in membership of the Trust, and does include where appropriate other partners who make up local Community Sports Networks and the wider Active Sussex Network (e.g. county governing bodies, local clubs, local authorities, education and health partners):
1. Community Sports Coach Scheme
2. Recruit into Coaching Programme
3. Sport Unlimited (part of the PE & Sport 5-hour Offer)
4. School Sports Coordinators Networking Programme
5. School Sports Partnership Multi Skills and NGB Bolt-on Courses
6. Step into Sport Youth Leadership Programme
7. Active Sussex Network (this is a County Sport & Physical Activity Alliance)
