History

Active Sussex has organised the annual Sussex Parallel Youth Games in partnership with the Co-operative Membership Group for the last three years. The event has also been supported by Freedom Leisure and Mid Sussex District Council, who generously has provided the Triangle Leisure Centre, Burgess Hill, the main venue for the Games, free of charge.

The first Sussex Youth Games took place in 2006, and has been growing in status and success ever since. The Games provides a springboard for local aspiring athletes, as well as increasing the confidence, fitness and self assurance of all who take part. Young disabled athletes from special schools across Sussex are invited to come along and take part in the event. IT is the only multi-sport event of its kind in Sussex.

Sussex Parallel Youth Games 2011

The 2011 event was our biggest Games ever with over 440 young disabled athletes from 18 schools taking part. Two new sports – athletics and golf – were added to the competition, joining old favourites boccia, new age kurling, cricket and swimming.

Volunteers from University of Chichester, St. Paul’s Catholic College, Oathall Community College and Outreach 3Way supplied valuable assistance on the day and local employees from companies American Express, Active Hastings, Co-operative and EDF Energy also gave their time to ensure the event went smoothly.

The 2011 Sussex Parallel Youth Games was attended by Paralympic athlete Sophia Warner, who lives in Hove, and renowned BBC sports commentator Paul Dickenson, who helped to inspire and motivate the young people to achieve their best.
