Real Madrid star put through his paces

ronaldo

A team of academics from the University of Chichester have travelled to Spain to test the skills of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for a new Sky Sports documentary.

The team, led by Sports Science lecturer Dr Neal Smith, carried out a series of innovative tests on the Portugese international, with the aim of discovering what makes him one of the best players in the world.

The academics spent five hours in a film studio with Ronaldo, using a variety of experiments to test his skills – including his sprinting and free-kick taking abilities. One of the tests involved Ronaldo kicking a football as hard as he could through a series of panes of glass in order to measure the maximum velocity of his shooting.

“We had a camera operating at 300 frames per second taking footage of Ronaldo kicking a ball as hard as possible through a series of panes of glass," explained Dr Smith. "Using special Quintic analysis software, developed in conjunction with the University of Chichester, we were able to measure ball speed, trajectory, and spin rate in each of the three rotational axes."

The programme, Ronaldo – Tested to the Limit, airs on Sky Sports Xtra on Saturday 10 September at 4:00pm and 10:00pm.

Dr Smith was assisted by University of Chichester Sports Science officer Zoe Wimshurst and technician Russell Peters.
