Sport Unlimited

What is Sport Unlimited?

Sport Unlimited is a nationwide initiative aiming to get more children and young people taking part in sport and physical activity, outside of school. Government funding is cascaded from Sport England to local communities via the County Sports Partnerships network.

The programme is targeted at ’semi sporty’ young people who have some interest in sport, but aren’t particularly involved within the community or local sports club. It will engage them in an extra 1-2 hours a week of high quality, sport and physical actvity, outside of school.

Sport Unlimited is part of the 5 hour offer for young people in England.

What is the 5 hour offer?

In July 2007, the Prime Minister announced the investment of an additional £100m (over three years 2008-11) into the Government’s PE and Sport Strategy for Young People (PESSYP). The aim of this strategy is to provide every child and young person (aged 5-19) the chance to do 5 hours of sport and physical activity per week.

Five Hour Offer Guide - The guide to delivering the Five Hour Offer brings together existing information on the aims of the strategy and the roles and responsibilities of those involved, for all those who play a part in delivering five hours of PE and sport to young people in England.

How does Sport Unlimited link into the 5 hour offer?

In 2008, Sport England announced a £36 million investment in ‘Sport Unlimited’ - a three year nationwide initiative to enable 900,000, 11 - 19 year olds who do not do any more then 3 hours of Sport, to take part in sports or physical activities that interest them most outside of curriculum time. The initiative is coordinated by Sport England in partnership with County Sports Partnerships, including Active Sussex.

Sport Unlimited in Sussex

The scheme is now entering its third year, running from April 2010 - March 2011.  Over the last two years there has been an increase nationally in the number of young people participating in high quality new sporting opportunities.  In Sussex alone we engaged 114,111 young people in the Sport Unlimited programme, retaining a total of 12,049 participants.

Active Sussex is working with a number of partners across the county including Schools and Colleges, Local Authorities, National Governing Bodies and their Sports Clubs, leisure providers and other sporting organisations to set up a number of sport and physical activity projects across the county for young people between the ages of 5-19.

In year 3, we will be supporting the delivery of over 150 projects across the county. The activities include traditional sports such as football, cricket, badminton, netball, and basketball. However, this year there are also a number of alternative sport and physcial activities being delivered, including ultimate frisbee, sailing, parkour free running and stoolball.
