Sussex Parallel Youth Games

Active Sussex annually organise the Sussex Parallel Youth Games in partnership with the Cooperative Group. The event is also supported by Mid Sussex District Council who provide Olympos, Leisure Centre very generously free of charge.

Without the support of the Cooperative Group and Mid Sussex District Council this event would not be able to take place. Over the last four years the event has doubled in size. In 2010 there were over 400 children from 18 x special schools across the county battling for glory at the Games!

The Sussex Parallel Youth Games offers young disabled athletes the opportunity to show off their skills and receive much-deserved recognition in sport in Sussex. The children compete in a number of sports including boccia, wheelchair basketball, basketball, new age kurling, tennis, cricket and swimming and it is hoped that these Games provide a springboard for local aspiring athletes.

The fifth Sussex Parallel Youth Games took place at Olympos, Burgess Hill on Wednesday 9 June 2010, which provided young disabled people in Sussex with a much needed/highly valued opportunity to test their skills and engage in active competition.

This year’s Games were the largest to date, with eighteen special schools across Sussex signed up to compete in the event and over 400 children, aged 11-18 years will compete in a variety of sports including Boccia, New Age Kurling, Swimming, Basketball, Tennis and Cricket.

The event is run by Active Sussex working in partnership with The Co-operative Group. Funding has been committed from the Co-op Community Dividend Fund until 2011 to secure the future of this event and deliver an Olympic and Paralympic legacy. The Games is also supported by Mid Sussex District Council and Freedom Leisure who generously provide the venue free of charge.

Volunteer students from Chichester College, Imberhorne School, St. Paul’s Catholic College and Oathall Community College provided valuable assistance on the day and local employees from American Express and Rix & Kay Solicitors LLP and EDF Energy also helped with the running of the event.

The Sussex Parallel Youth Games was opened by Paralympic Gold Medalist, Tim Prendergast and attended by Cabinet Member and Portfolio Holder for Mid Sussex District Council, Pru Moore.
