Equality and Diversity

Active Sussex is fully committed to the principles of equality of opportunity.

Active Sussex Statement of Intent

Active Sussex is fully committed to the principles of equality of opportunity and is responsible for ensuring that no job applicant, employee, volunteer or member receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of age, gender, disability, race, ethnic origin, nationality, colour, parental or marital status, pregnancy, religious belief, class or social background, sexual preference or political belief.

Active Sussex will ensure that there will be open admission to all those who wish to work in partnership with Sussex County Sports Partnership Trust in all aspects of sport and leisure activities and that they are treated fairly.

Active Sussex is committed to achieving gender parity (with a minimum of 30% of each gender) and greater diversity generally on its board, including, but not limited to Black, Asian, minority ethnic, diversity, sexual preference and disability.

Equality Legislation

Public Organisations are legally obliged to ensure that they do not discriminate against participants, employees, and volunteers on grounds of disability, gender, and race.

Active Sussex Equality Policy

The policy has been created with an aim to improve equality of access to sport and the promotion of equal opportunities for all. You can find a copy of our Policy on our policies page.

We are currently undertaking a process to put in place an Equality Diversity & Inclusion Strategy and action plan as part of our 2023-27 Strategy.

Please find a copy of our current Diversity Action Plan.

Diversity on the Active Sussex Board

Active Sussex do not pursue diversity for the sake of it or to achieve a ‘tick-box’ result; the Trust advocates diversity to make a step-change in thinking of sport and physical activity partners across the county. As a result of this, Active Sussex wants its Board and Staff team to reflect the population they serve and to ensure the Trust considers all aspects of Sussex society when we make decisions about the allocation of resources.

Active Sussex is committed to having no less than 1/3rd of the Trust’s Board from either gender (currently have 5 women and 7 men) and welcomes from all members of society without prejudice to age, sexual orientation, disability, gender, religion or race. We will ensure any board vacancies receive the widest possible coverage to guarantee that opportunities are seen and available to all.

Active Sussex Staff & Board Equality

In 2022, Active Sussex completed a Staff & Board Equality Audit – here are the key findings. We appreciate this document contains charts and tables, so if you require it in a plain text or alternative version please email Gemma.
