Active Sussex are honoured to be named as a finalist in the Not for Profit Business of the Year category, alongside local third sector businesses; Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, Martlets Hospice and Rockinghorse.

The team are delighted after being shortlisted by a panel of expert judges for groundbreaking work in Sussex over the past 12 months.

Active Sussex CEO Sadie Mason MBE, who has who has positively contributed to sports development for over 20 years, said: "We are delighted to have been named a finalist in this category.

"These are very special awards because they recognise the achievement of amazing businesses and great teams, across a wide range of organisations and to be short-listed in this category is an honour and means a lot to our business."

The Not for Profit Business of the Year Award recognises third sector businesses (charities, social enterprises, other not-for-profit organisations, etc.) driven by social and environmental aims that have set clear objectives, met or exceeded expectations and forecasts, demonstrated tangible evidence of success and have a clear and compelling vision for the future.

Active Sussex demonstrated this through helping people who are at most risk of inactivity across the county by working collaboratively to change lives for the better through physical activity and and sport.

  • Older people
  • People with a long-term condition or disability
  • People living in deprived areas with high rates of inactivity

We have also been delivering the Satellite Clubs programme across the county since 2013, with the Sport England, Lottery funded programme designed to work with underprivileged and underrepresented young people across the county. Over the past 12 months 522 young people have been part of the programme across 22 clubs.

We also work with local councils, authorities and organisations to build the workforce needed to engage inactive people through our Workforce project and Insight intelligence. And run events including the Specsavers Sussex School Games, a ‘mini-Olympics & Paralympics’ and the Parallel Youth Games - a multi-sport participation event for disabled children in Sussex.

Active Sussex promoted good practice which is shared with partners at the annual Active Sussex ConferenceActive Sussex Network and Sussex Disability Sports Network while providing services including Workshops & CoursesFunding, and continues to be committed to the welfare of children, young people and adults engaged in sport as demonstrated through the promotion of Safeguarding policies.

We also support ongoing campaigns and promotions such as This Girl CanProject 500, and celebrate and showcase Sussex sporting achievement through the annual Sussex Sports Awards.

2019 marks a record year for entries for the Brighton and Hove Business Awards. With hundreds of applicants whittled down to just fifty-six finalists, this year is set to be a hot contest to receive one or more of the prestigious fifteen trophies.

"Here at Active Sussex, the whole team ensures that future physical activity and sport focuses on the people and places most in need of the support we can offer and to have this showcased at this year's awards is fantastic," said Sadie, an ex-international basketball player of 13 years.

Entries were judged by an experienced panel of local and business experts including Gatwick Airport, Natwest, University of Sussex, EMC Corporate Finance, Mayo Wynne Baxter, Churchill Square, Kreston Reeves, Cardens Accountants, Global Radio, Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce and The Gemini Print Group. Fiona Shafer, Managing Director at MDHUB, took the role as Chair of Judges.
