Active Travel Challenge 2019!

Active Travel Challenge 2019!

Categories: Active Sussex News Health & Wellbeing

Employers across Sussex are encouraged to sign-up to the Active Travel Challenge for a healthier and more environmentally-friendly commute.

Sustrans, the charity making  it easier for people to walk and cycle, have joined forces with East Sussex County Council, and launched the innovative travel challenge, a FREE competition for anyone who works in East Sussex.

The challenge incentivises people to walk, cycle, take public transport and car share by competing on their own or as part of a team and will take place from the June 1 - 30, 2019.

The Active Travel Challenge invites people to log their daily journeys online and gives them feedback on how many journeys they make, how much exercise they get and how much money they save by not travelling alone by car.

People can register now to be in with a chance of winning early bird prizes.

Why take part

The first reason to take part in the challenge is because it’s great fun and there is also a wide range of prizes on offer for individuals and groups.

By involving your organisation in this free challenge, you will help your employees to become more active by building exercise into their daily routine. You'll also help to reduce local congestion.

In East Sussex, 55 per cent of people choose to drive a car or van to work. A fifth of these are trips under 2km because a large proportion of the population both live and work in the same area. Forty per cent of journeys in Newhaven, 48 per cent in Eastbourne and 51 per cent in Bexhill and Hastings are under 5km (figures from 2018).

The online tools provide detailed feedback and allows you to interact with friends, colleagues and participants from other workplaces in East Sussex.

And perhaps most importantly, cycling and walking are a great way of incorporating physical activity into your day, while using public transport and lift-sharing are great ways to help reduce congestion and improve local air quality. All can save you money. This helps you look good, feel good, and do your bit for the environment!

To be in with the chance of winning, you will need to log at least two journeys a week, and each week the value of the prizes increases.

As well as this, there are also grand prizes to be won. Participants who log more than 20 journeys between 1st and 30th June will be entered into a random prize draw to win a two night stay in a luxury cabin at Swallowtail Hill.

How do you win?

Workplaces: The winning workplace in each size category will be the workplace that achieves the highest level of participation.

This means that you need to get your colleagues involved and encourage them to have at least one go at travelling by a different, more sustainable mode of transport rather than just reaching for the car keys and driving.

They just have to try one journey and log it to be included as a participant and to get your team's participation percentage up. We hope that they will enjoy it and try it again.

Individuals: Those who register before the 31st May, will be entered into a prize draw.

There's a range of prizes to suit everyone. All you need to do to be eligible, is log journeys.

The more sustainable journeys you make, the more chance you have of winning a weekly or grand prize.

Good luck!
