In 2015, he co-founded the UK youth sports charity StreetGames and he has played a significant role in the significant success of StreetGames over the past 12 years, managing the grant-aid applications that secured over £35m for StreetGames.
In 2017, Kerry established his new company ‘The Bid Writing Business’, to use his expertise to enable a wide range of organisations secure new funds through grants, commissions, and tenders. The company is focusing on the sectors of sport, health, and youth.
Q: What advice you give to local providers and charity and voluntary partners in Sussex who are trying to access large pots of national funding?
A: Be realistic. Does your project closely fit the criteria, and is your annual turnover large enough to reassure the funder you can manage a large grant. Would securing three or four small grants be more realistic. If you go for a large grant, create a dedicated team and commit at least 5 full days to the planning and writing of the bid.
Q: Would you say there is merit in local stakeholders teaming up to put in bids for larger funding pots?
A: Definitely. Large funders are working together now, and they want applicants to work together too. All funders want to see partnerships in place, and often this means a consortia bid where there is shared responsibilities and shared use of the grant that is requested.
Q: In two sentences, how will the funding landscape be different in 2018?
A: 1. Funders will work together much more to make their money go even further. 2. Involving users and beneficiaries in the planning and delivery of new projects will become even more important to funders.
Kerry is a confirmed speaker at our Active Sussex Network 2018, which takes place on 22nd February in Brighton. On the day, Kerry will be talking about ‘Using Insight to Support Funding Bids’ and will also be giving a workshop on the topic in the afternoon.
