Community activators in Crawley have led recruitment of adults in the South Asian community into activity.
Recruiting black residents remains a work in progress. Residents in deprived areas of Brighton & Hove have been successfully recruited by several projects.
The reality in the rest of Sussex is that it is extremely difficult to recruit from deprived areas, even for projects where this is the main focus.
Supporting providers to overcome these recruitment barriers is a priority for Active Sussex.
Happily, recruitment of disabled people and those with long-term health conditions has been much more successful due to an established network of providers in which Active Sussex is embedded and helps to coordinate.
Active Sussex will continue to support these providers. A challenge going forward is to identify and support those health conditions and disabilities which have a lower profile and less established route into activity.
We approach the next phase of this work with optimism that for every societal group facing barriers to activity, there is someone in Sussex who knows how to support them. Our role is to match them up.
