Freedom Leisure Join Dementia Friendly Swimming Pools Network
Freedom Leisure – which operates K2 Crawley on behalf of Crawley Borough Council – has been chosen to join the second phase of the new Dementia Friendly Swimming initiative which starts on May 19, 2016.
The Dementia Friendly Swimming project is a collaborative venture developed by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) with funding and support from Sport England and the Department of Health Innovation, Excellence and Strategic Development Fund.
This ground-breaking programme is being rolled out over a three year period to create a network of Dementia Friendly Swimming Pools across the country. These pools, which includes K2 Crawley, will work proactively to train staff and consult with users to create the right setting to enhance the swimming experience of those living with dementia and their carers by improving facilities and removing barriers.
“It is a great privilege to be asked to join the Dementia Friendly Swimming Pools Network and we are excited to have the chance to offer Dementia Friendly Swimming to the Crawley community,” says Alyson Zell, Freedom Leisure Aquatics Business Manager.
“We have included Dementia Friendly training into our induction process and have upskilled key staff both poolside and front of house to ensure that from the moment people arrive at the centre there are immediately acknowledged and their needs are met,” she says.
“This initiative centres on the swimming activity but of course our guests with dementia and their carers will be welcome to use the reception and changing areas and we hope they’ll enjoy some social time in our café too,” continues Alyson.
Once the K2 Crawley Dementia Friendly Swimming programme is established, Freedom Leisure will then look to other sites within its portfolio of 76 centres that are suitable to offer the programme.
