The Active Sussex Board is seeking to appoint an exceptional individual with the necessary blend of skills and experience as Independent Chairperson to the Trust, and more specifically to provide committed leadership to the Board and Chief Executive, acting as a driving force to further develop its commitment and vision to increasing participation in sport and physical activity across Sussex.

The Trust’s Chairperson promotes good governance by ensuring that the Board of Trustees effectively performs its principle tasks of:

  • Being lead advocate for physical activity and sport in Sussex and being the official representative of Active Sussex at high profile stakeholder events and meetings
  • Championing Active Sussex across all partnership networks
  • Promoting the Active Sussex vision
  • Presenting the Business Plan and Annual Report to partners and stakeholders
  • Providing inspirational leadership to the Board and all partner agencies
  • Contributing to board performance and management through effective chairmanship
  • Ensuring effective governance of the Board
  • Carrying out inductions, appraisals and on-going development to maintain a high performing board
  • Setting strategic goals within the business plan and ensure that effective monitoring is in place to evaluate progress to achieving those goals 

Position is non-executive and not salaried. Out of pocket expenses will be paid where appropriate. Following a recent skills audit of the Board, applications from candidates are favoured with significant backgrounds in:

The Independent Chairperson will have the following attributes:

  • Understands Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity,  accountability, openness, honesty and leadership
  • Has excellent leadership skills and prior experience of committee work
  • Can exercise tact and diplomacy in their work
  • Possesses good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Acts with impartiality, fairness and has the ability to respect confidences

The Chairperson to the Trust Board should work and/or reside in the geographical county of Sussex.

In addition, the Trust’s Chairperson will be expected to be able to prepare for and make the following time commitments in order to fulfill their duties:

  • Induction training (0.5 day)
  • Four Board meetings annually (2 hours per meeting)
  • Two Partnership events annually, including the Annual General Meeting (up to 2 days)
  • Four sub-committee meetings annually (2 hours per meeting)
  • One annual Board Away Day
  • Represent the Trust on working groups/conferences/events (1 day)
  • Regular contact with the Board Members, Partnership Director and core staff of the Partnership
