Active Sussex Chair Christine Gibbons awarded MBE for services to community sport and fitness
Active Sussex is delighted to announce that our Chair of Trustees, Christine Gibbons, has been awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in His Majesty the King’s 2026 Birthday Honours.
The award has been recognised for her exceptional contribution to community sport, fitness, and reducing inequalities in physical activity.
Christine has dedicated many years to championing inclusive, accessible opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to be active.
Her leadership and advocacy span a remarkable range of charities and organisations working to remove barriers to participation. These include Everybody Health & Leisure, Cycling UK, Access Sport, The SU, University of Bath, parkrun, and Active Sussex.
Across these roles, Christine has consistently championed the belief that movement should be a right, not a privilege, and that communities thrive when everyone can access the physical, social, and mental health benefits of being active.
Her work has supported thousands of people to find welcoming, inclusive spaces to move more, connect, and build confidence.
Active Sussex CEO Anthony Statham said: “Christine has championed community sport and physical activity with unwavering commitment, ensuring that people of all ages and backgrounds have opportunities to be active. We are thrilled to see her work recognised with such a prestigious honour.”
Christine’s strategic insight, compassion, and determination have played a central role in shaping Active Sussex’s mission to tackle inequalities and strengthen partnerships across the county.
Her leadership continues to inspire staff, volunteers, and partners who share her commitment to creating a more active, equitable Sussex.
We extend our warmest congratulations to Christine on this thoroughly deserved recognition.
