Active Sussex Chair of Trustees gives keynote at University of Brighton graduation ceremony
Christine Gibbons MBE was invited to address graduates at the University of Brighton last week.
Christine, who has dedicated her career to improving public health, community sport and physical activity across the UK, gave the keynote speech to graduates from the School of Education, Sport and Health Sciences on Friday, July 31.
In her speech, she encouraged graduates to use their skills to create healthier, more inclusive communities.
Christine said: “I was delighted and honoured to be asked by the University of Brighton to be this year’s keynote speaker at the School of Education, Sport and Health Sciences graduation ceremony.
“These graduates are the next generation that will be entering our sector, and I hope by highlighting the important work currently going on to remove barriers to sport and physical activity they can be inspired and motivated to help make a difference.”
The ceremony brought together graduates and their friends and families, along with university staff and partners to celebrate academic achievement, personal success and the start of the next chapter for thousands of University of Brighton students.
Professor Donna Whitehead, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Brighton, said: “Graduation is one of the most important moments in the university year, and it is a privilege to celebrate the achievements of every one of our graduates.
“Each student has followed their own unique path to reach this milestone, bringing different experiences, perspectives and ambitions that enrich our university community.
“They leave Brighton equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make a positive difference in their professions, communities and beyond.”
Christine was one of a number of keynote speakers who took part in the ceremony, which ran over four days for the various schools at the university.
Professor Whitehead said she was delighted to welcome the speakers, adding: “Whether through innovation, public service, entrepreneurship or community leadership, they demonstrate the impact that can be achieved when talent is matched with purpose, and I hope their stories inspire our graduates as they take their own next steps.”
Christine was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in His Majesty the King’s 2026 Birthday Honours for her exceptional work in promoting fitness and reducing inequalities in physical activity.
She believes that physical movement is a fundamental right, and has spent decades championing opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to be active.
Alongside Active Sussex, her leadership spans organisations including Cycling UK, Access Sport, parkrun and Everybody Health & Leisure, where she has consistently worked to remove barriers to participation.
Her influence has helped shape Active Sussex’s mission to tackle local inequalities and inspire a healthier, more active society.
