12th June 2025
This Girl Can has launched the latest phase of its campaign, Let’s Get Out There, which aims to inspire more women to enjoy the benefits of being active outdoors.
Women face greater barriers to accessing and enjoying outdoor spaces, and this is especially true for women on lower incomes from underrepresented groups, including Black women, Asian Muslim women, pregnant women, new mothers and older women.
The aim of the campaign is for women to think of nature and outdoor spaces as places to enjoy and improve their physical health and overall wellbeing. This Girl Can will be sharing lots of ways to get moving outside and showcasing the groups and organisations out there already overcoming these barriers.
How you can get involved
Whether it’s practising yoga, running, wheeling, cycling or simply walking, striding or strolling, the idea is to get women and girls to enjoy and make the most of the outdoors.
This Girl Can has provided a pack of new resources for partners to get involved and share the Let’s Get Out There campaign, as well as two guides which you can download below, on making outdoor activities more inclusive for women and cultural understanding.
This Girl Can Sussex Network Community of Learning event
Active Sussex wants to help narrow the gender gap in physical activity in Sussex and in particular address the barriers for women and girls being active outdoors, especially when we have so many amazing green spaces. That’s why we’re holding a Community of Learning event at the Sussex Innovation Centre on Monday, July 7, to invite partners to come together to:
- learn from the Sport England insight around belonging, especially for those women on lower incomes from underrepresented groups – including Black women, Asian Muslim women, pregnant women, new mothers, and older women
- discuss the Let’s Get Out There recommendations for those who provide and promote experiences for women in natural spaces and in particular better understand women from diverse cultural backgrounds
- reflect on making spaces safe and welcoming as a follow up to our January 2024 Safe Spaces event (toilet provision, lighting, transport links)
- hear examples of what is taking place and provide a space for partners to connect and learn from each other.
A networking walk and talk is being offered at the end of the session for partners to continue to connect in an informal and active way.
