Meet Active Sussex trustee Sarah Curgenven

In a regular series, Active Sussex introduces its staff and trustees.

Sarah Curgenven joined Active Sussex as a trustee in September 2024 and sits on the Strategy Progress and Growth Committee. Here, she talks about why she wanted to be involved with Active Sussex, her love of pizza, and what skills and knowledge she is bringing to the team.
Why did you want to become involved with Active Sussex?

I’m passionate about creating inclusive and engaging ways for people to be active in ways that work for them.

I want everyone to have the opportunity to find the fun in being active, to feel the benefits mentally and physically, and to want to be able to do more.

What does a typical weekend look like for you?

It generally starts on Friday at 5pm for me. I teach a Pilates class to a client I’ve had for years, and it’s a lovely end to the week for us both. Following that, I’m a big pizza fan, so I will try to find the most delicious one I can for dinner!

Saturday and Sunday are a mixture of Parkrun, walking a section of the South Downs Way with my dog, seeing family and friends for (more!) food, studying for my Health and Wellbeing Coaching Diploma, a Pilates class or two (not teaching), and trying to get a good dose of sea air.

What skills and knowledge do you have to help make a difference at Active Sussex?

My career has involved identifying, designing, delivering, and creating opportunities for people to have fun being active.

I’ve worked with teams at healthcare charities, Sport England, and healthcare professionals to address the significant barriers faced by underrepresented communities and have seen the positive impact of these collective efforts.

By listening to and supporting communities, I have helped thousands of individuals move more through events in the UK and abroad and by developing initiatives that support people’s efforts to get stronger at home.

Since moving to Sussex in 2020, I’ve made friendships through activities such as learning to row, Parkrun, and the Brighton Half Marathon, dog walking on the Downs, cycling, volunteering for Memory Walks at Wakehurst, and teaching Pilates at PureGym and Six Physio.

When the opportunity to join the Board of Trustees with Active Sussex came up, I jumped at it. It’s a brilliant chance to combine my love for movement and my ability to bring people together to make positive change.
