Meet the Place Lead for Hastings

Ryan Edwards joined the Active Sussex team in February 2026 as the Place Lead for Hastings.

He oversees the Hastings Place Expansion Development Award, a Sport England-funded programme focused on creating sustainable, community-led system change.

Here’s a chance to get to know Ryan a little better – from his passion for community development to his love of surfing.

What skills and knowledge do you have to help make a difference at Active Sussex?

“I have a passion for supporting communities to enjoy the benefits of moving more.

“I have worked for more than 20 years on community sports development and public health initiatives focused on identifying and addressing barriers that create inequalities within local communities.

“I strongly believe that empowering local people and ensuring that their lived experience is at the heart of decision-making is key to enabling more inclusive, connected, and active communities.”

What do you like to do in your spare time?

“I love the outdoors, especially the sea – when I have a spare moment, that is you’d find me, pursuing my love of surfing and snorkelling!”

What does a typical weekend look like for you?

“I volunteer with Rottingdean Village Football Club, running their Under 7’s side.

“I look forward to it every weekend and have a great time fostering a love of football with the children involved, even if it does take up most of the weekend!”

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“Anywhere with a beach and a decent surf break – Hawaii has to be high on that list!”
