Play Their Way with Happyhockey
Happyhockey is an exciting initiative designed to increase participation in hockey across Sussex by creating communities of play rooted in fun, safety and personal development.
The programme blends two core sets of principles: BodyStickBall for hockey skills, and BodyMindSoul for wellbeing.
This integrated approach is why players explored breath work in the warm-up and took a deeper look at the mechanics of the “sweep” during activities.
A humanistic coaching approach
Happyhockey is part of the Active Sussex Play Their Way programme and as such their coaching philosophy aligns closely with our values at Active Sussex – encouraging people to learn in their own way, build confidence and enjoy movement.
While some management elements are essential (such as wearing shin pads and mouthguards), the coaching itself takes a humanistic approach, supporting players in discovering what works for them rather than defaulting to the group’s view.
Active Sussex was delighted to visit the second Happyhockey session on Sunday, January 25, where players of all ages came together to learn, play and enjoy the game in a welcoming, developmental environment.
During the session, everyone practised the sweep pass, but each player was encouraged to identify their own priorities within the technique.
The BodyStickBall principles act as a framework, not a rigid checklist.
The next session dates are February 22, March 22, and April 26.
All sessions run from 1.30–3.15pm at Woodlands Meed College Astro, Birchwood Grove Road, Burgess Hill, RH15 0DP.
The sessions are open to adults and juniors aged 13+, and are perfect for both current players and complete beginners.
