Sadie Mason, MBE, Honoured with Special Recognition Award at Sussex Sport & Physical Activity Awards

Sadie Mason, MBE, the former CEO of Active Sussex, has been recognised for her remarkable sports and physical activity career with a Special Recognition Award at the Sussex Sport & Physical Activity Awards.

The prestigious ceremony was held on November 28 at Sussex Cricket Club.

Sadie, who stepped down as CEO of Active Sussex in August 2024 after 19 years at the helm, has made an enduring impact on the sporting landscape in Sussex and beyond.

Reflecting on her surprise award, Sadie said: “I am just overawed to receive it.

“It’s a bit humbling actually, because the 19 years have gone by, and I’ve never once thought that I do this for the recognition.

“My team know that I’m not one of those who like to stand and speak. Therefore, knowing that people value the contribution that I’ve made is overwhelming. It’s really awesome.”

Sadie’s career spans several decades and includes a wealth of leadership roles.

In 2014, she was awarded an MBE for her services to sport, a testament to her dedication and contributions to the field.

Prior to her time at Active Sussex, Sadie held several influential positions, including serving as a director for a sports governing body and as a development manager at Sport England.

She also contributed her expertise to the Boards of Sport England and London Sport after the 2012 London Olympics.

Known for her passion for basketball, Sadie played a pivotal role in the development of the sport throughout her career.

Between 1984 and 1995, she represented both England and Great Britain 39 times.

She continues to contribute to the sport as a non-executive director on the Board of the British Basketball Federation (GB Basketball), a non-executive director on the Board of Basketball England, and the current programme director for GB Maxibasketball.

“What drives me every day is the value of sport and being physically active to me personally, and the benefits I’ve had from it,” she said.

“I just like to be able to give it back through my work and, although I’m a retired CEO, I’m still active playing basketball and organising basketball sessions for people of a certain age, and it keeps me going.”

Sadie’s dedication to sports development, leadership, and advocacy for inclusion has had a profound impact on the sporting community, making her a respected and influential figure in the industry.
