Mencap Triathlon pilot 2025
Worthing Mencap hosts first-ever inclusive triathlon for adults with learning disabilities
Worthing Mencap made local history recently by hosting its first-ever Swim, Bike, Run triathlon event for adults with learning disabilities – believed to be the first of its kind in the South East.
The pilot event took place on Monday, October 13 and saw 25 participants take on a fun and inclusive version of the traditional triathlon format.
The challenge began with a 200-metre swim – eight lengths of the pool at Splashpoint Leisure Centre – followed by a 20-minute cycle session in the gym, and finished with a 3K walk or run along the Park Run route on Worthing seafront.
While some participants completed all three stages, others chose to take part in two, demonstrating that flexibility and enjoyment were at the heart of the day.
Jon Train, Regional Manager from British Triathlon, praised the event, saying: “The Swim Bike Run mini triathlon event put on by Worthing Mencap was fantastic – a true celebration of community, determination, and joy.
“It showed what’s possible when we remove barriers to participation and create opportunities for everyone to take part, achieve, and shine together.”
Instead of focusing on competition, the event was about participation, confidence, and shared celebration.
Richard DeNiese from Worthing Mencap explained: “It’s not competitive. It’s just about community and everybody being up for a challenge. Today was about planning and learning, seeing what works, what people enjoy, and if we can go up a level next time.”
The event was the result of collaboration between Worthing Mencap, South Downs Leisure, and British Triathlon.
Erin Southam, Group Swimming Programme Manager at South Downs Leisure, helped coordinate the day.
“Richard came to me after speaking with British Triathlon, as Worthing Mencap already run regular swim and gym sessions here each week.
“With a safe running route right on the seafront, it made perfect sense to link everything together into a triathlon-style event,” said Erin.
“All we needed to do was plan it so the activities flowed back-to-back.”
Helen, an instructor at Splashpoint known for her spin classes, led the cycling stage. With disco lights, upbeat music, and an infectious party atmosphere, she helped keep everyone motivated and even inspired some impromptu dancing once participants finished their rides.
Those less comfortable on spin bikes used adaptive bikes in the gym, ensuring everyone could take part safely and confidently.
The atmosphere throughout was one of pure joy and encouragement. Matthew Wassell, an active Worthing Mencap participant who helped motivate others on the day, summed it up simply: “I just want to have fun.”
Many of the participants regularly swim and exercise together on Mondays, so the event was a natural extension of their weekly routine. After finishing the swim, Ollie proudly said: “I won. It was brilliant.”
Lisa added: “I was on fire! I found it good.”
Harry Trangmar, another participant, said ahead of the race: “The running on the seafront and the bike I know are going to be the most challenging bits, but I’m looking forward to the running.”
Richard said: “Everyone participating today has really pushed themselves to complete the challenge. They have done so with an amazing attitude and a smile on their face.
“It has been great to give people with a learning disability the opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort zone with a fitness challenge.
“A huge thanks for British Triathlon, South Downs Leisure Trust and Mencap’s Our Active Community project for supporting Worthing Mencap to put on this great event.”
The success of the pilot event has sparked conversations about making it a regular fixture.
And if the smiles, laughter, and celebrations at the finish line were anything to go by, Worthing Mencap’s Swim, Bike, Run event has already made a lasting impact – breaking barriers, building confidence, and showing just how powerful inclusive sport can be.
