Introducing Carden Nursery and Primary - the first Sussex school, and one of only 104 nationally, to receive the prestigious School Games Platinum Mark Award from national charity Youth Sport Trust.

The School Games Mark Award is offered on four levels, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. It is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community.

Schools achieving Platinum must have been awarded Gold for the last five academic years, and Carden Primary received the prestigious award at the end of last year.

It has been an incredible journey for the Brighton based school and Headteacher Helen Longton-Howorth said the key to national sporting success was hard work and dedication from the entire school team.

"We are so proud of our PE team, our children, parents and community for the level of active involvement they take in sporting activities and were thrilled to be the first school in Sussex to be awarded the Platinum School Games Mark.

"This is testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire school community towards ensuring our children lead active, healthy lives and develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity.

"We wanted to ensure that our children had the opportunity to experience as many different types of activity as possible in an affordable way for all of our families... and also to build and develop a legacy which will remain beyond the lifetime of the funding."

Helen, a Headteacher champion as part of the Active Sussex Governor Training programme, added efficient management of the Primary PE and Sport Premium, helped played a major factor in Carden Primary's success.

Active Sussex is one of the 43 County Sports Partnerships, - the only organisations that are funded by Sport England to offer primary schools free, objective advice and support that helps them spend the Primary PE and Sport Premium effectively.

Nick Chellel, Active Sussex's School and Community Sports Officer, worked closely alongside Carden Primary's team to help maximise the funding impact to lead to self-sustaining improvement with the overall goal of building a lasting legacy.

"Carden Primary School have a proven track record of high quality PE and sport provision and have been a leader of good practice and in Brighton and Hove, and across Sussex, for many years," Nick said.

"They spend their PPSP [Primary PE and Sport Premium] effectively to ensure it caters for every pupil and to help maximise it's impact across school.

"Being awarded the Platinum School Games Mark is a fantastic achievement and recognition of their hard work and commitment to PE."

Helen added: "Active Sussex have played a pivotal role in the development and success of sport at Carden... Through the provision of information, advice and support covering topics such as how to effectively spend PPSP, CPD opportunities and networking/linking professionals and other teacher together."

"I am immensely honoured to be the head teacher of a school which is considered to be a leader of good practice in Brighton and Hove and am also pleased to have been able to share our success and journey with others in my role as Head Teacher Champion with governors at local training events."
