Tess tries Hockey with Vitality

Categories: Active Sussex News This Girl Can

As you may know from my various fitness escapades as This Girl Can Ambassador, I’m always up for trying new sports. At the moment I’m really loving hockey, having started only a few weeks ago.

After getting some top tips from the England women’s team (see video), I’ve joined Southwick Hockey Club as part of Vitality’s #WomenInSport campaign to celebrate the benefits of team sport and encourage more women to join a local team.

There’s so much more to team sport than fitness – you’ll make new friends, learn new skills, and feel a sense of belonging with others. You’ll all work towards a common goal, and have fun along the way – fitness is just a side effect.

Vitality has just become the Official Wellness Partner of England Hockey, and the title sponsor of both the grassroots programme, Back To Hockey and the 2018 Vitality Women's Hockey World Cup, which takes place in London next summer. As well as supporting England Hockey, Vitality is also Official Wellness Partner of the England Netball team, Arsenal Women’s FC, Liverpool Ladies FC and England, Wales and Scotland Women’s Rugby Union teams.

Their #WomenInSport campaign runs across all of these sports, but I chose hockey as I’ve never played it before and wanted to throw myself stick-first into something completely new.

I’m just a few weeks in with Southwick Hockey Women’s 2nd team and I honestly feel like I’ve always been a part of the team.

From the very first session I was made to feel welcome and everyone’s been so supportive in helping me learn and develop my skills. I’ve already played one match and had my second one last weekend, playing centre forward. I'm pleased to say we won, and I scored two goals!

If you’re thinking about joining a new team sport, take that first step and get along to a session.

We’re looking for new players at Southwick if you fancy giving hockey a go!

Training is 7.30-9.30pm at Portslade Alridge Community Academy, Chalky Road, Portslade, BN41 2WS and we play Saturday mornings!

Join the Facebook group here to get involved!
