Lewes Golf Club wins Environmental Sustainability Award
Lewes Golf Club has received the Environmental Sustainability Award at the Sussex Sport and Physical Activity Awards 2025, for its work protecting biodiversity and wildlife as well as sustainable course management.
The club is committed to working with the South Downs National Park Authority, Sussex Wildlife Trust and Weald to Waves to protect and enhance the environment.
From installing bird boxes for native species such as starlings, swifts and barn owls, to maintaining beehives at the top of the course to support pollinator populations, protecting nature is at the top of the agenda.
This work has led to an increase in birds of prey, such as kestrels and peregrine falcons, on the course.
In a conscious effort to protect the environment, the club avoids the use of fungicides or pesticides, instead embracing natural solutions and allowing wildlife to forage and play their part in the ecosystem, proving that a top-quality golf course can coexist with a flourishing natural habitat.
Practices like the cut-and-collect programme for the rough encourage the growth of meadow wildflowers by preventing soil nutrient enrichment, and the club ensures all green waste is composted on-site.
Most recently, they announced a significant milestone in their journey toward a greener, more sustainable future with the installation of a state-of-the-art solar carport.
This project has made the clubhouse carbon neutral.
On winning the award, a spokesperson for the club said: “It’s a great achievement for all the hard work we’ve been doing. It’s not always easy, but this is a real thumbs up to what we’re doing.”
